If you are a woman over 40, looking to go Keto then I urge you to start slow. The reason being that Keto is a lifestyle change (which doesn’t happen overnight). It is not just another FAD diet that you try hardcore for 4 weeks & boom transform into a Kardashian… na aaah… I’m sorry to burst your wishful thinking bubble but that’s not how it works. Also, as women our bodies work on a 28 day hormonal cycle or pre-menopausal or menopausal. So there’s a lot going on compared to a male life-long 1 day hormone cycle. This means that taking drastic measures may cause some sort of imbalance which we definitely want to avoid. You see, Keto for women over 40 is mainly about improving our hormonal imbalance & healing our damaged cells so that, we can protect our bodies from age related illnesses, extensive weight gain and loss of energy/sleep. So first off, if you are just starting on the Keto journey (as a woman over 40) then experts suggest that instead of going hardcore from day 1 that is going cold turkey on all carbs and sugar, start slow. Follow the 5 steps shared in the video. Then start looking into your macro-nutrients ratios. That is your meals should now consist of say 70-75% fat, 15-20% protein and 5-10% carbs. Now some women over 40 can reach ketosis eating upto 50gm of carbs a day & some with lower metabolism may struggle to get in ketosis or even shift weight until they reduce it down to just 20gm a day. Again, you can gradually try this. Start with 50gm a day & if that isn’t working, lower it to 40, 30 & then 20gm a a day. As for the dietary health fat amount. First, Cortisol has a vital physiological role By raising plasma glucose levels at times of stress, providing the body with the energy it needs to face bodily attacks from injury, illness or infection. Now, Too much cortisol for too long can have serious, negative effects. The tissue breakdown, reduced protein synthesis and conversion of protein to glucose can decrease musculature and increase abdominal fat. It also suppresses levels of growth hormone and sex hormones, which can reduce libido and fertility. It lessens glucose usage and increases blood levels potentially predisposing to diabetes.   Now, Exercise is perceived by the body as a form of stress and stimulates the release of cortisol. In general, the more your fitness improves the better the body becomes at dealing with physical stress. However, research shows that the time and intensity of exercise can affect the level of cortisol release. When it comes to exercise, more may not be better.  Training for more than 60 minutes, even at a low intensity will burn up the body’s glycogen stores and stimulate cortisol release. Long-term cortisol exposure was significantly higher in endurance athletes. Short high intensity exercise such as sprints, HITT or weight training cause less of an increase in plasma cortisol concentrations. However, the levels tend to surge if rest periods are short and work levels are high and was also increased by training in the early morning when cortisol levels are naturally higher and the response to exercise can be more. So, It is possible to enjoy the undeniable benefits of exercise while minimising the impact on cortisol concentrations: * Don’t overdo it. Take regular breaks from intense training and listen to your body. * Leave intense sessions to later in the day, when cortisol levels are lower. * Eat right to fuel your body and make sure you consume carbohydrates and protein after exercise to decrease the cortisol response. Remeber, overdoing it can have the opposite effect of what you’re trying to achieve. Therefore, aim for around 150–200 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week and allow yourself time to rest between workouts.
