When you go through menopause you get a spike of cortisol, leading to muscle atrophy. You may think you have fat in places that are really your muscles wasting away. On keto, it may take time to grow your muscles back. It may also take time for keto to help heal your severe insulin resistance. The whole philosophy I teach is to get healthy to lose weight, not lose weight to get healthy. Focus on improving your health so you’ll be more successful: higher energy, better cognitive function and sleep, improved resistance to sleep will all contribute to your success. It’s not only about weight loss; there are many other health benefits you can get from being on the keto diet. Too much protein can raise your insulin so be sure to eat a moderate amount of it. I recommend three to six ounces, although if you’re a big person who is very active you could go to as much as eight ounces that’s all. Sounds odd that too much protein might prevent your weight loss, but it can. The keto diet can definitely work for you for weight loss; you may simply have to do some adjustments. Fixing Your METABOLISM is how you make losing weight and keeping it off EASY. My maintenance calories are 3200, meaning I need to eat that much on a daily basis to maintain my weight. Any less, and I start to lose weight and body fat. I've been able to increase my maintenance calories to such a high number by following a process known as Reverse Dieting. This is done by finding your maintenance calories (track your food for a week or two, and as long as the scale isn't moving much, this is proably around your maintenance), then slowly adding calories, about 100-300 extra at a time. The goal is to not see much weight gain at all or only a small amount (no more than about 0.5 lbs per week generally). Keep slowly adding calories over a few weeks and months until you get to the point where you feel like it's hard to eat much more, now you're ready to enter a fat loss phase. However, you HAVE to pair this with a good strength training program. Don't try to do a bunch of cardio and think about 'burning it off', think about BUILDING muscle and your metabolism. Muscle is the most metabolically active tissue in the body and requires lots of calories to fuel it. The extra calories from your diet will be partioned to building muscle and not fat if done correctly.
